Business Ethics

February 20th, 2009

It occurred to my business partner and I, that the internet is the best and worst thing to happen to business. You can now reach out and find suppliers around the world. You are never out of contact with your customers or suppliers. Speed is everything.

But then there is the down side. I must get 200+ spam emails everyday. I just started a new email, and already I have spam!?!? So when we decided to stop the insanity, we began with two tenets.

First, Greed is not good. Therefore we will only give lead information to one agent. There is no point in selling something you already sold! Over selling can only lead to alienation of your customers. Individuals will be upset that 10 Agents call, and Agents will be upset that they are paying their hard earned money to find out that someone else has already called. This idea of multiple sales of one contact is bad juju! When we were buying leads, I hated it, then and now.

Second, Trust is implicitly required, a person places trust in my site with their needs and information. They are asking me to help them find and Agent. Were I to sell their contact information to marketing companies or mailing lists, would be a violation of their trust.

So there are other sites that do all of this. Put in your information, stand back and watch your phone light up with agent after agent. To add insult, you could get the same quote from different agents. There is no screening of Agents to see with who they are contracted. Then within the month, your name goes out to mailing lists, your junk mail volume explodes, more calls from more salesmen selling everything from advertising to light bulbs.

Not what we want and not what we would be comfortable inflicting on people who placed their trust in us. So one lead, one Agent. No more, no less.

Call us old fashioned, call us fiscally irresponsible, we’ll just be happy with ethical.
